1 For Lab: “From Element to Salt ,” Chapter 4 in your lab manual, will give you an opportunity to work with some common chemistry lab techniques and to observe some of the chemical behavior that will be explained by the material covered in the next couple of weeks. Note the prelab assignment. Homework 4 due Friday 9/21, but it covers many of the topics on Exam 1. Exam 1, 9/20/07, 8:30 pm, Hall of Music. Covers lectures 1- 7, Labs 1-3, and Learning Objectives. 2 Calcium in nerve action A nerve impulse is transmitted from one cell to a muscle cell through the use of calcium ions and neurotransmitters. The nerve impulse triggers the opening of calcium channels allowing Ca 2+ ions to migrate into the cell. The presence of Ca 2+ ions triggers release of neurotransmitters (acetylcholine ACh) into the synapse. The neurotransmitters collect on the other side of the gap and trigger a contraction.
