CRACKING THROUGH THE GLASS BARRIER 2 Cracking Through the Glass Barrier In the military, many barriers still exist today for women wanting to advance in higher ranks and those who have a desire to engage in direct combat. Since 2008, only one female has been awarded a four-star general rank in the Army, even though there are approximately 90 officers in this rank within the Armed Forces ( Associated Press , 2008). Furthermore, there is also a need for more female officers in the middle leadership ranks, even though female officers account for 30% of the Army’s Officer Corp. Female officers have lead units in combat, been on the frontlines, and lead regional hospitals successfully like the current General, Ann Elizabeth Dunwoody. However, according to military statutes women are not allowed to have combative jobs in the military (Wikipedia). Today’s military has to establish organizations that will look at female combat pilots, transportations officer, and military police. Women have the ability and are leading provincial reconstruction teams in forward operation bases in Afghanistan and Iraq. Such female warriors are leading the battles and taking a serious
