Axia College Material Appendix E Hardware/Software Components In your own words, describe the following hardware/software components Legacy systems Existing or older computers or programs that are continually used because it still performs tasks the user needs. A company usually invests a large amount of money into this system, and requires occasional updating. Mainframe computers A large information processing and storage system that is in control of complex processes, performs at high speeds, and stores tremendous amounts of data. Microprocessors Also described at computer on a chip and central processing unit. When attached with memory and input-output devices becomes a microcomputer. In 1970 Intel came out with the first microprocessor. PCs Also known as personal computer, is used for individuals general purposes. Apple introduced their PC in 1976 and IBM introduced theirs in 1981. A PC is made up of a microprocessor, memory board, keypad, screen, printer, etc.
