Appendix B Final Exam Access the Electronic Reserve Readings link on your student Web site for Week Nine. Select one of the topics below and read both articles that present opposing sides of the argument surrounding that topic. o Animal experimentation o Outsourcing o Media violence Answer the following questions in paragraphs of approximately 100 words demonstrating your critical and creative thinking skills. 1. Identify if the topic you chose, as presented by both articles, is a problem or an issue and explain what makes it a problem or an issue. If you believe the articles present both problems and issues, identify and explain what the problems are and what the issues are. I chose animal experimentation for my topic. I believe that animal testing is an issue because there are conflicting viewpoints. The two articles disagree on whether or not this subject is justified and ethical. The issue for the author of “Animal Experimentation Is Vital for Medical Research” is that animal research is necessary for science to lead us to medical innovations and improved health. In his mind, it is the only way that medical researchers will find cures for diseases and new procedures for organ transplants. The second article titled “Animal Medical Experimentation Is Unjustified” explains that this type of research is unreliable and uses funds that otherwise could have been used for prevention of disease. 2. Were the problems or issues expressed effectively? Describe how the problems or issues were or were not best expressed. I believe that both perspectives on animal testing were expressed effectively. Although the evidence for both sides are contradictory to one another, each provided sufficient evidence that each side needs to be heavily considered. The pro animal research included many achievements made by testing including advanced surgical procedures and vaccines. However, the article that is anti animal testing also provides substantial evidence that using animals has been proven unreliable. This article states “Penicillin kills guinea pigs and hamsters, but is very beneficial for humans.” Both articles bring a wealth of knowledge to the table and express each side effectively with information from past research. 3. How would you determine the credibility of the sources of information used by the authors in the articles when investigating the problems or issues presented by your topic? HUM/111
