In the United States, we need to plan for retirement. Social Security will not cover our needs when we retire. 1. Introduction 2. Meeting qualifications to receive benefits a. Requirements: age, disability, divorced spouse, federal/state employees, non- US citizens etc. b. Life expectancy in the US, US has highest percentage of working elderly, 5% of 70+ c. Delayed and early retirement benefits. d. In 2007, 3.6 million seniors 65 years and older live in poverty (9.7% of elderly) 3. Possibility of Social Security going bankrupt, Social Security’s affect on the economy a. Recession has resulted in loss of 5.7 million jobs since Dec 2007. Fewer people working means less being paid in. – CNSNEWS.COM b. Trust fund projected to be depleted in 2037. – CNSNEWS.COM c. In the next two decades 78 million Baby Boomers will retire, and become financial and medically dependent on the current U.S. taxpayers. d.
