Course Syllabus Calendar Entry Soil behaviour; stresses and strains in soil masses; stress path; soil deformation and consolidation theory; soil strength and failure criteria of soils; soil modelling techniques; laboratory testing applications. Course Contents 1. Introduction: Soil description and classifications. Typical soil mechanics problems. Geotechnical modelling. 2.5 hours 2. Stresses & Strains: Definitions of stresses and strains. Transformation. Invariant. 2.5 hours 3. Basic Equations: Equation of equilibrium. Constitutive equations in linear elasticity. Isotropy and anisotropy of soils. Determination of elastic constants. 2.5 hours 4. Behaviour of soils and critical state concept (I): Triaxial compression. Behaviour of N.C. and O.C. clays. Critical state line.
