1/17/12 1 EVOLUTION Life on Earth Types of fossilization, again • Permineralization • Replacement • Carbonization • Molds/casts – steinkern • Amber Trace fossils – Tracks, trails, and burrows Permineralization Original pore spaces are permeated with groundwater. Minerals precipitate out and fill in the pore spaces, cementing the organic matter into rock. Cell structure can be preserved! Recrystallization One mineral changes into another. Calcite to aragonite. Both CaCO 3 Steinkern amber

Easier to produce a marine record. Hard parts comprise most of the record. Carolus Linnaeus First to produce a systematic method to name all living things. 1/17/12 3 What is a species? An interbreeding group of individuals that creates viable offspring. Individuals within the group are not identical -they vary in characteristics. Reproductive isolation of small subspecies is critical to forming new species. What is taxonomy? The science of classifying organisms. Species is the basic unit It is not only concerned with the classification of organisms but also with the criteria to identify specific groups. Any named grouping of organisms (genus, species) is a called a taxon (plural taxa ). Taxonomists are interested in comparing different species and deciding how they are related-and figure out their evolutionary history. A genus is group of species, family is a group of genuses order is a group of families class is a group of orders phylas is a group of classes and kingdom is a group of phylas domain includes 2 or more kingdoms.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
