HW#2 IsHappines the Ultimate End of Man? HW#2 IS HAPPINESS THE ULTIMATE END OF MAN? (01/24/12 for 01/27/12) Q1: An “end” is that for the sake of which an agent acts, i.e., it is a __final__ cause. It is something that is sought for __itself__? Q2: An appetite’s end is that which “moves” the appetite from “quiet” potency to act. But, what we seek are goods. Therefore, an appetite’s object is a __good__. Q3: A __means__ is something pursued for the sake of something else, i.e., for the sake of an end. A pure means is something that is not willed for itself but __only__ for the sake of something else. An end-means is something willed for itself but also for something else. An ultimate end is an end that is never a __means__ but that is willed only for itself Q4: An __ultimate_ end in ethics is an end beyond which there can be no further ends. It is an end that is willed only for itself. It is an end for everything we do and for the sake of which we do __everything__ that we do. It makes all seeking of subordinate ends __meaningful_.
