Freud 168 - 181 Wednesday, November 02, 2011 3:10 PM Dreams are a form of wish fulfillment and they reveal deep desires and secrets locked in the unconscious. 3 components of personality: id, ego, superego. Function of Id: provide for the release of energy in the system (Pleasure principle - to rid the person of tension or at least to reduce the amount of tension to a low level so that it can be kept under control). The id is the primary source of psychic energy and the instincts. The force that creates pressure on the entire system for release. Ego - controls and rules the id; the executive of the personality system; center of rational thinking, learning, and wisdom. Capacity is laid down by heredity but developed by socialization and education. The ego is governed by the reality principle. It gives us a firm grip on reality and channels the id's drives in ways most likely to produce happiness. Ex. Child learns to discriminate over what he or she puts into the mouth; accepting food and
