PART ONE eBay INC., a $4.6 billion global powerhouse in internet commerce, was founded in 1995. It connects hundreds of millions of people around the world every day, empowering them to explore new opportunities and innovate together. eBay does this by providing the internet platforms of choice for global commerce, payments and communications. Since its inception, it has expanded to include some of the strongest brands in the world, including eBay, PayPal, Skype, Shopping.com, and other brands. eBay’s original vision was to create the first global economic democracy; a people’s market in which anyone in the world could sell or buy just about anything for a fair price. It now plays an even larger role in our lives; it’s no longer just about fairness; eBay is about fostering that human connection through “Social Commerce” which we define as “a powerful combination of commerce, communication and community that enhances our ability to connect with the world around us. eBay’s goal is to make Social Commerce a Global reality by continuing to expand economic opportunity by fostering an emotionally satisfying experience for people around the world to explore, learn, shop, share and talk with each other. Hundreds of millions of people use eBay already, so it was shocking to learn that this is global powerhouse was having problems in its Asian markets. So I researched for the answer, I discovered a few interesting findings to help reach an understanding for the problems. There are several reasons why eBay failed trying to enter and get a foothold into the Asian Markets. American companies as a whole have had difficulties trying to get into the Asian Global market beginning in the year 2000. The biggest reason is our cultural differences. eBay 2
