Unformatted text preview: CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY CASE OFFICERS CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY CASE OFFICERS MERICAN MILITARY UNIVERSITY COUNTERINTELLIGENCE IN509 1 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY CASE OFFICERS INTRODUCTION Case Officers are mentors, a very well prepared breed of professionals responsible for providing tutoring and guidance to the Agents in the field. Case Officers are responsible for keeping the agents at a reasonable level of certainty and in touch with reality, because many times the Agents selected to a determined Area of Responsibility, are the people responsible for betraying his or her country loyalty. Due to the harsh reality of being discovered, prosecuted, falling in disgrace or being executed many agents and case officers will develop a relationship like psychiatrist and patient. So it is imperative to the Case Officers to be very prepared and mature to handle many adverse and unorthodox situations during a mission. Case Officer must exhibit characteristics like intimate knowledge of the clandestine / covert operation field, professionalism at the operational level, a cool head, and control of emotions. CIA case officers are at the minimum someone with a college graduate, fluent in one or more foreign languages, and always a fully trusted loyal American citizen with a Top Secret security clearance; Case Officer are individuals of exceptional intelligence, integrity, and initiative. Case officers are the CIA elite corps, and as such they are entrusted with the most sensitive national secrets the U.S. possesses, and indeed the very lives of the indigenous agents they recruit and handle. (1) What skills do CIA case officers need to have in order to appropriately assesses and support covert actions? How do these skills compare with what was needed in past decades? ( Leerburger, M.J.) The skills needed on the past and at our current time of crisis for a good Case Officer are the same. The necessary changes that occurred after September, 11 2001 are related to the necessity of changing the ways of Intelligence Operations are conducted within the many Intelligence Agencies belonging to the U.S. Government, for this specifically paper the 2 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY CASE OFFICERS Intelligence Operations within the Central Intelligence Agency. The professional skills attributed to a Case Officer, and the field agents will be pretty much always the same on the core of this psychiatrist-patient relationship, changing only the arena and mission to be executed. CIA CASE OFFICER Case Officers are the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Agents assigned to oversee the spies working in the behalf of the United States Government. Resuming a Case Officer duty, it is realistic to say that a Case Officer is someone that went overseas and served its duties meeting agents or popularly called spies. CIA Case Officers spend most of their employment life with the CIA at overseas assignment. Agents in the majority of the time are foreigners who spy for the CIA. Consequently the Case Officer will be the link between the Agents and the CIA leadership. CIA....
