HOW WILLS A U.S. WITHDRAWAL FROM IRAQ RESHAPE THE GEO POLITICAL SCENE IN THE MIDDLE EAST? OVERVIEW Iraq is the short name for the country called: The Republic of Iraq, the country is located in Southwest portion of the Asian continent, and it share borders with Kuwait (South), Saudi Arabia (South and South West), Jordan (West), Syria (West and North West), Turkey (North), and Iran (East). 1 Iraq today is a nation struggling to survive and exist, due to the U.S. lead war, and occupation of its own territories by the U.S. troops and its allies. Iraq is currently under a civil war characterized by sectarian violence, being also a proved to be an Al Qaeda stronghold and center of operations in the region. What makes the country volatile, unpredictable and consequently makes the neighbors in the region to fear facts such as a prolonged U.S. Occupation or a quick U.S. and its ally’s troop’s withdrawal. The U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq will be viewed as an strategic victory and relief by Iran and Syria mostly; Turkey will focus its attention to the Kurds, specially the separatist movement within Turkish territory and the Kurds in northern Iraq; Saudi Arabia and Kuwait will wait to see what the Iranians will make of the withdrawal due to their sectarian and religious (Shiites’ and Sunnis) differences, and Jordan will keep preparing and fighting terrorist groups in Iraq (Employment of Jordanian Special Forces) or in Jordan, in case of Al Qaeda try to expand their operational bases in the Jordanian Kingdom. A immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq will make the region more unstable and open for the expansion of Iranian influence in the region and consequently a natural growth of Iranian 1 Wikipedia Online “Iraq”,; Edit April 2007; available from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_War; accessed 13 May 2007. 2

Nuclear projects, what would simply destabilize the region or would send the other Middle Eastern nations into a massive try to develop nuclear weapons, or getting protection from countries that are capable of having nuclear weapons and willingly to defend this nations if necessary. An unplanned U.S. Withdrawal due to internal U.S. political pressure from Iraq would leave a nation without Law and Order, and open for the expansion and establishment of radical terrorist groups, a anti American breeding and training paradise. It is valid also to mention that following a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, the nation would fall in a massive sectarian civil war, immersing the country into chaos. The U.S. withdrawal would also reflect a high cost to the United States of America taxpayers, because of the costs of bringing in the troops and the highly technological weapons and assets being used on the Iraq War. A U.S. Withdrawal from Iraq would keep Iran out of reach to a quick, and possible necessary U.S. military conventional
