Social Contract Theory Hobbes – State of Nature (Leviathan) o State of Nature – Short, Nasty, brutish, poor, solitary… o Fear ì death (desire comfortable) peace through agreement (contracts) Human beings are essentially selfish o Conditions: 1. Equality of need 2. Scarcity of resources 1+ 2 Competition 3. Basically equal in power 4. Limited altruism Rational self-interest = always confess (Prisoners dilemma) Free rider (0 years) vs. Sucker’s reward (10 years) / act in self-interest Prisoners dilemma = state a nature (no contracts) Problems of the commons Who contracts? Not slaves/minorities, women, children, animals, nature If contract <> in self-interest = break rules for reform, for mutual benefit For ex: When u use the dog as the living alarm they don’t have the ability to form for this contract nor want to do it o When we eat animal meat people say it is not good, but follow the religion – God create them for us, but people say we have diff. religion
