S TUDY G UIDE : “T HE W EST Using this study guide The following document has all of the terms, quotes, lists, and ideas contained in the most recent powerpoint presentation (note: I change these frequently so some variations may exist). As a result, you should not feel that you need to copy any of this information while in class. The following questions are addressed in this section of the lecture. You should be able to answer these questions by the end of this section. If you can’t, see me during my office hours or talk with your seminar leader: What is the west? Who is the Other? How are the two connected? What was the relationship between the US and 1st Nations before the Civil War? What changes? What cultural factors unite and separate native people? How are western Indians unique? What is buffalo culture? Why are Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee such important events in the narrative of western history? Who is George Armstrong Custer? What characteristics are shared by most Western towns? What effect does mining, ranching, gambling, alcohol, and/or prostitution have on these cattle towns? The following are sample essay questions used on previous exams dealing with this topic. The essay question used on your upcoming exam will look quite a bit (maybe exactly) like these: The years from 1865 to 1900 were particularly difficult for non-whites and ethnic groups. Select one population (Freedmen, Native-Americans, or Immigrants) and discuss the goals and their efforts to try to achieve these goals during the era. What prevented this group from achieving equality? What was the role of the Federal government in either supporting or undermining these aims? For all of these groups (collectively), were race and ethnic differences more or less important than their economic condition? Discuss the concept of “the west” as presented to Americans by either Frederick Jackson Turner or “Buffalo Bill” Cody. What role did Native Americans play in this vision? In class, we discussed the ways that Native-Americans were viewed (or ignored) by the U.S. Was the era one of cultural conflict or one of genocide (be sure and support your answer with examples)? Depending on your answer (culture or genocide), explain the significance of events at Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee to your view.
