Viet 1 Viet Hoang POLS2306.470 April 21, 2009 Race Analysis The movie “Melting Pot” also known as “Race” is about the race between two candidates: Gustavo Alvarez, a Latin-American, and Lucinda Davis, an African-American, for the new position of the City Council member. They play for running mates well for the position of Jack Durman, a retiring councilman. Both try to lower the prestige of the opponent. Both of them have the vote of their community which is equal to each other; hence, they need to gain the support of the white community. However, each of them has their own weak points that can be taken advantage of by the rival. Gustavo’s son, Miguel Alvarez, is the sources of Gustavo’s problem. Miguel’s bad behavior and his involvement in gang violence lower Gustavo’s reputation with people and are the major cause of the losing of Gustavo’s campaign. On the other hand, Lucinda David has a secret pregnancy which is referred to as “political suicide” by her political advisor, Chungmi Kong. When Miguel commits a sin by shooting a police dog in a crowded place, Durman shows Davis where the gun, which Gustavo helps his son throw away, is located.
