The Origins of Sociology The Origins of Sociology Even though ancient people also tried to figure out social life (eg asking why war exists, why some people become more powerful than others, why some are rich but others poor etc), they often based their answers on superstition or myth etc., and they did not test their assumptions When people accept their tradition, it provides ready answers (eg “we do this because it has always been done this way”), and discourages original thinking Sociology, which is a social science, did not emerge until 18th & 19th centuries in western Europe when tradition could no longer be counted on due to sweeping change in that era Social observers began to use scientific methods to test their ideas around the middle of the 1800s
