Inside Criminal Law The purpose of Criminal Law is to protect innocent people from becoming a victim of a crime, rather it be a physical crime or property crime. Criminal laws are set to inform people of what is illegal and what the punishment is for crimes committed this could be probation, jail time, prison, or even death in some cases. I feel that everyone can help their own community cut down on criminal activities by starting neighborhood watch programs or instate crime prevention units. A proactive approach will help to deter potential criminals, reduce criminal opportunities, and encourage everyone to be more alert of what is going on around them. The public needs to interact with organizations in their neighborhoods such as local youth groups, fire fighters, and church groups to learn more about crime prevention. The first written source of American criminal law is the U.S. Constitution it is the supreme law of the land, and it is the basis of all the laws in the United States. Statutes or laws passed by Congress and states legislatures plus local ordinances are second on the list. Federal states are laws erected by the U.S.
