The Prison System The Prison System Josh Gorban The prison system is imperative in today's society. Without prisons there would be anarchy and many lives would be lost. In the past prisons were used for very different reasons than we use them today. Today it is based on the inmates security needs. There are public and private kinds now days. There has been much debate over privatizing prisons as well as debate over how to house prisoners. A prison is for those who have been convicted of felonies and will serve lengthy periods of time in prison. The goal of a prison is to keep prisoners in the prison, keep them safe while they are in prison, keep them from getting into trouble, keep them healthy, and keep them busy. The guards have to make sure that they are running the prison properly and make sure all the inmates are not suffering. Prisoners go to either a minimum, medium, maximum, or a supermax prison based on the security needs of the inmates. Most of the inmates at minimum security prisons are first-time offenders, usually nonviolent, and fairly well behaved. When a prisoner is on medium- security, the security measures are more relaxed and they do not have armed guards. Prisoners are allowed to watch television and have computers in their room. The prisoners are allowed off the prison grounds so that they can go to school or work. “Some critics derisively refer to minimum-security
