The article below articulates why drug companies are getting away with manipulating their numbers to benefit their business. This is what makes new drugs often seem better than they really are. Drug companies report the relative risk reduction instead of the absolute risk reduction. The articles gives a great example of how fondaparinux is reported to be better than enoxaparin because in a study the results showed for every 1,000 who have ACS, there are 10 fewer deaths, 4 fewer strokes, and 25 fewer major bleeds. It would appear by these statements the choice between the two would be simple. However if the numbers were presented more honestly, they would show for every 100 patients only means 1 less death, .4 fewer strokes, and 2.5 less major bleeds. Therefore, fondaparinux may be better but at a very small magnitude.

However, when they are manipulated for the drug company’s best interest, it causes people to think they will get results most common patients will not see. Drug companies do this all the time because of the outrageous number of people who will seek out a drug once they are exposed to these seemingly amazing statistics. They can make billions of dollars on one drug if they manipulate the numbers accordingly and get their message out to the public.
