Leadership Development Plan Prepared by: Michele Baker Prepared for: GM 592 2010 Purpose of Study At every job I’ve had, I have been promoted very quickly into a supervisory or leadership position. However, in my current role things have changed. I would like to take this opportunity to research and analyze what could be causing this change in events. It took some time to get a

university to take a chance and employ me since I did not have any experience working at a college. I started my career at this university as an Admissions advisor and currently work as an Academic Coordinator. Under current management I have lost the ambition to move up as I have seen what it has done to our team lead; however this job has provided me with the opportunity to better my education. I hope to be better equipped to be a successful leader as I transition into a new career role. Background Analysis I found my way into the education field when I realized that what I had originally gone to school for was not all it was not everything I had imagined it to be. My bachelor’s degree is in Criminology and Criminal Justice with my primary focus being juvenile corrections. When I obtained the position I wanted with the state at a juvenile corrections facility, I was promoted to a level 2 supervisor within six months. This put me in closer contact with upper management. Unfortunately I realized that it is not the young criminals that make the system dysfunctional; it was the people running the facilities. I decided on a new career path and utilize my education to help set myself up for success. Once I receive my Master’s Degree, instead of continuing my hunt for a good employer, my next step is to create my own business. My partner and I plan to open a pharmacy where he would run the medicinal aspect of the business, and I would run the administrative side. Our roles would have to work closely together as he has already stated his flaws in management style and he would like me to oversee the employees as a whole. In order to be successful at this it is

important to know how to financially and administratively run a business, as well as how to best manage employees. The ultimate goal of an employer should be to have happy and loyal employees. The first self assessment I completed suggested that I have a high leadership potential; already a promising start. Literature Review According to our text and other research I have conducted there are 8 major leadership theories. They include Great Man, Trait, Contingency, Situational, Behavioral, Participative, Management, and Relationship. The Great Man Theory states that great leaders are born not made. This theory arose when most felt that great leaders were only men. It suggests a tone that leaders were almost heroic. Today there are several factors that make this theory irrelevant. Leaders are not always of the superhero nature. Many great leaders simply believe in their companies, their people, and in the need that people have to be satisfied. Also, many women have proved to be great leaders, and many men
