Provide suggestions for how the unit (i.e. Korea, Japan, China) could be improved. What other books/movies could be used? The book Ancestor Worship and Korean Society is one of the required readings in the Korean unit of this course. The book gives a detailed description of rural Korean social life in regards to filial piety and domestic rituals. These practices are influenced by Confucian values that heavily emphasize a respect for ancestors. The discussion of how the family and class organization of the society connects to the worship of the dead reveal Korea’s cultural values. This book as a source of information for understanding Korea for the purpose of comparing it to both Japan and China has both positive and negative qualities. There are many positives in the book Ancestor Worship and Korean Society. One of them is the inclusion of information on a specific family, which provides details about the cultural influences of various rituals. This is more enlightening than just informative descriptions about the rituals themselves. The book articulates how “family and lineage organization in rural Korea affect ritual procedures” (Janelli 1982: 3).
