SOCIOLOGY PAPER: “Hooking up” vs “On Postmodern Uses of Sex” Thesis: Both Bogle and Bauman address the changing perception of love and the way people experience relationships to form the modern hookup culture. Paragraph #1 Topic: Although both Bogle and Bauman describe intimate relationship prior to the hookup culture, Bogle focuses on parental control while Bauman focuses on societal pressures. Parents control over intimacy “The process for most young people to find potential mates was heavily monitored by parents, their families, and their communities” (Bogle 11) Men control because of the monetary aspect of dating “As intimate relationships moved away from parental supervision, increasing sexual intimacy entered the equation. With this closeness increased opportunity for sex” (Bogle 19) Bauman – too much control and not available – commercial use & controlled by state, reduced surplus to illicit Paragraph #2 -> may be split into two (bogle and bauman overlap, how bogle goes farther)
