Brenda Chan 02/15/2012 Article Summary In the article Doo Wop: The Intersection of Gospel, Jazz, and Pop , the author explores the origins of doo wop and the era of doo wop. The article goes in depth about the key groups and artists that defined doo wop. With its influences from other genres of music, doo wop became an important development of black music. Doo wop was the product of urban vocal harmonizing groups that consisted of predominately black males. Its influences come from gospel, jazz, pop, and blues. It was the largest single subgenre of rock ‘n’ roll in terms of output. Typical characteristics of doo wop were a melodramatic, gospel-inflicted tenor lead with a bass and falsetto and background vocals that consisted of nonsensical syllables. Along with these other genres, doo wop roots also came from two pre World War II black pop/jazz vocal harmonizing groups, The Mills Brothers and The Ink Spots. These groups left a lasting impression on the future genre of doo wop. In the late 1940s, there were a number of young black groups that tried to imitate these two groups, notably the Ravens, the Orioles, the Four Knights, and the Four Tones. From the doo wop genre, there came to be many “one hit wonders” as well as groups who only produced two hit songs. The reason for this was more likely the result of treatment of artists
