Leader as Stylist 20 years ago the halflife of a ceo was sixteen or seventeen years The half life today is less than five years In thirtys and forties if you were a good worker you were promoted to leadership whether you were a good leader or not How do we select the best leaders? How do we choose who to promote? Trait Approach They found traits that differentiated good leaders from bad leaders Before we knew it, we had a checklist of 80 or 100 traits differentiating btwn good and bad leaders Between different companies different traits were idealized, so a lot of traits weren’t able to be generalized across many companies Behavioral Approach Now the possibility of being train most anyone to be a leader is open Studies discovered there are a lot of behaviors that differentiate good and bad leaders Initiating structure – aka task orientation, just like it sounds, clarifying what the goal is, how subordinates are supposed to work, monitoring their work, showing them how to do it Consideration – aka people oriented, has to do with how long you get along with your coworkers, do they trust you, how open are you guys, how considerate Initiating structure was not difficult for American managers to learn in the 50’s and 60’s.
