Types of igneous intrusions Plutons = solidiFed magma bodies of any shape <100 km 2 in size. Batholiths = lots of plutons together, like the Sierra Nevada. Can be huge. Dikes = a thin parallel-sided intrusion, cutting across host rock layering. Often vertical. Sills = a thin parallel-sided intrusion, intruded parallel to host rock layering. Often oriented sub-horizontally. Diapir = a irregularly- but often blobby-shaped batch of magma, often rising up through older rock like a balloon.
