Further lecture notes from session 3B (I didn’t have time to cover these; rather than taking class time away from other topics, I’ve chosen to upload my own talking notes—much more detailed than the normal lecture outline you see projected and uploaded—to make these points available to you.) IV. Ritual texts A. The Da xue or Great Learning—learning for adults (SCT 330) Very famous text. Key point: the linkage between individual self- cultivation and order in the entire realm. These things are all related. Everyone’s job is to cultivate themselves, from ruler on down; when this is done, the world will be ordered. B. Other chapters from the Li ji or Records of Ceremony … I would emphasize: 1. “The Meaning of Sacrifices” ( Ji yi ) (SCT 339-42) KEY TEXT here. Several points: (a) Note the various ritual details… including the “impersonator” (shi4); we get a glimpse, at least, but only that, of what these rituals were like (b) the emotional, psychological component…
