HEREDITY AND HORMONES 2 Heredity and Hormones The glands responsible for secreting chemical messages into the blood , referred to as , the endocrine system , work s together in a constant chemical conversation with the nervous system . It consists of a thyroid gland, parathyroids , pancreas, pituitary gland, ovaries, testes, and the pineal gland ; together the glands regulate the functioning of the human body. The endocrine system also helps to coordinate and integrate complex psychological reactions by releasing chemical substances called hormones carried throughout the body by the bloodstream. Messages carried by the nervous system travel through the body in a few hundredths of a second. Moreover, a message carried by the bloodstream is a more slow ly process-taking seconds, sometimes minutes, to reach its goal. Psychologists find hormones interesting for two reasons. First, at certain stages of development, hormones organize the nervous system and body tissues. Second, hormones activate behaviors (Psychology: An Introduction, 2005, p. 76). The chemical substance hormone” released by the endocrine glands help regulate bodily activities. Located below the voice box is the thyroid gland and it produces the hormone thyroxin , which regulates the body’s rate of metabolism. Parathyroids, four tiny glands embedded in the thyroid ; secrete parathormone that control and balance the levels of phosphate and calcium in the body (Psychology: An Introduction 2005, p. 76). The pea-sized pineal gland regulates activity levels
