Five Pillars of Islam Susan Lewis 3/21/2012 There are many beliefs of Islam that are reflected through the Five Pillars. The first pillar is the Shahadah, which is the belief of the unity of God and Muhammad as God’s messenger. This reflects the central belief that there is one God and Muhammad is his messenger, and the requirement to tell others of Islam. The second pillar is Prayer, a continual routine of prayers. This reflects the central belief in prayer. True followers of Islam perform ritual prayers with water, sand, or dirt. He or she turns to face Mecca, recites prayers and passages from the Qur’an while bowing and kneeling. Reciting the prayers is thought to strengthen one’s belief in God and his goodness. The third pillar is Zakat, or spiritual tithing and arms-giving. This reflects the belief that one should help others. At the end of each year Muslims are required to donate at least two and a half percent of their wealth to other needy Muslims. The fourth pillar is Fasting, or

Unformatted text preview: abstention from food, drink, sex, and smoking. All Muslims are encouraged to fast from time to time, but during Ramadan fasting is required for the entire month. The fifth and final pillar is Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca. All who can afford to make the pilgrimage are expected to do so. I believe the easiest of the Five Pillars for me to fulfill would be Zakat. I like to think of myself as a giving person; I know I would not have a problem giving a small percentage of my income to those who are in need. I believe that two and a half percent is not too much to ask for you to help people who are less fortunate than yourself. I believe the hardest of the Five Pillars for me to fulfill would be Fasting. I do not think I could go a full month without eating, drinking, and smoking Newport cigarettes. I honestly could not make it a week. I have so much respect for them for being so devoted that they could accomplish it once a year....
