Cities and Metropolitan Areas A. What makes a place a “city ”? 1. Legal/Political (in U.S.): an incorporated place that has been granted a city charter by a state legislature. 2. Sociological definition: “a relatively large, dense, and permanent settlement of socially heterogeneous individuals.” (Louis Wirth, “Urbanism as a Way of Life” [1938]). 3. Physical & Land Use attributes or characteristics: “nonextractive” land use and functions such as: protective walls (?) large impressive buildings and/or monuments wide variety of housing styles and cost levels busy transportation center & connections 4. Distinctive “way of life” and form of social organization:
