November 23/2011. Lecture 17 – -Muhammad has assigned/created alliances with Arabian groups; promise to accept his views -when Muhammad dies, these groups take it as an opportunity to return to their previous traditions -problem for Islamic community is around who should lead the Muslim community -one group feels the leadership should pass through the bloodline; his cousin and son-in- law Ali: problem was Ali was only 30 at the time and many thought he was two young for the role of spiritual and political leadership of Muslim community -elders bestow power/leadership on a man named Abu Bakr - Abu Bakr becomes first Khalif/Caliph (leader of community) -political and military leader, but also bestowed religious power; not exactly Pope, but responsible for religious solidarity among Muslim community -first Khalifat/Caliphate , tries to retain the communities Muhammad had created -dies not long after leadership begins; still manages to consolidate Arab community and appeal to other Middle Eastern communities - Umar follows after Abu Bakr , reigns for 10 ish years -ventures into area now known as Syria, modern Iraq, north of Africa; Islam spreads very widely under his leadership - Uthman is third Khali : very pious leader
