The COW - A symbolic representation of your mother, as you go off your mothers breast you move to the cow - To kill a cow is symbolically like killing your mother Vedic Tradition - Harmony in the universe Hinduism traces its history back to the beginnings of the Vedic tradition and the VEDAS The Vedas as a cultural scripture is very important to the Hindu people The Vedas are the texts who are composed by the Arya people - Reflection of the religion and culture practiced by them - They are generally divided into four basic groups 1. MANTRAS/SAMHITAS - The oldest layer, back to 1500 BCE 2. BRAHMANAS - Original commentary on the original poetic material - Dated about 1200 BCE 3. ARANYAKAS - Means ³having to do with the wilderness/forest´ - Connected to leaving home and searching towards the Srmana movement - This is NOT the Srmana movement but heading in that direction - Philosophically oriented material - Getting away from ritual and figuring out other answers - Dated about 1000-800 BCE
