Lecture 24 – Jainism Karma Moksa/Mukti/Nirvana – space of freedom, happiness, joy JAINSIM Sramana: people breaking off from main society to explore themselves in solitude o Questions more about oneself; who am I? what is my purpose in life? Why am I here? Throughout history of Jainism there have been 24 teachers who have appeared to provide guidance and enlightenment; called Tirthankara “bridge builder” ; teachers were providing the bridge between Sansar and Moksa ; provide resources just before hitting the bottom of the cycle so that they can again reach the top Jina (victor): same as Tirthankara , refers to the same 24 teachers o Most recent of these teachers was Vardhaman Kasyapa = Mahavira Vardhaman Kasyapa/Mahavira: contemporary version of the Buddah; lived around 599 BCE o Hegiography: a biblical biography o These biographies tell us about him beginning with his fetal stage, about how he was so considerate to even remain still in his mother’s womb so as to not cause
