People were motivated to believe because it was so phenomenal. Morgan’s Cannon In no case may we interpret an action as the outcome of the exercise of a higher  psychical faculty, if it can be interpreted as the outcome of the exercise of one which  stands lower in the psychological scale. Trouble? When pinning scientific theories against each other, it’s not obvious which is  the simpler one and which is the complex one. Why Do Science? Understand the natural world, find ‘truth’ Benefit society, improve lives Predict and control Avoid ‘scams,’ formulate rational policies (about energy/global warming/etc. If we could  get good answers to those questions, one hopes that that would trickle into the political  process and we would make better decisions as a political body.) Advantages of Science? Public: any informed person can participate, replication. Rational: minimize effects of passion and politics Objective assessment: method for evaluating claims It works: technology, health care
