Dynamics, MIE 230 Spring, 2012 Problem Set #5 Due: Wednesday, March 7 1. The spring is unstretched at the position x = 0. Under the action of a force P , the cart moves from the initial position x 1 = -6 in. to a final position x 2 = 3 in. Determine (a) the work done on the cart by the spring and (b) the work done on the cart by its own weight. The spring constant is 3 lb/in under stretching or compression. Ans. (a) U 1-2 = 3.38 ft lb, (b) U 1-2 = 2.72 ft lb 2. A car is travelling at 60 km/h down a 10 percent grade when the brakes on all four wheels lock. If the coefficient of kinetic friction between the tires and the road is 0.70, find the distance s measured along the road which the car skids before coming to a stop. Ans. s = 23.7 m 3. Each of the two systems is released from rest. Calculate the velocity v of each 25 kg cylinder after the 20 kg cylinder has dropped 2 m. The 10 kg cylinder of case ( a ) is replaced by a constant force of 98.1 N (10 x 9.81) in case ( b ). Ans. (a)
