I. Our System is a common Law System A. Common Law- Is where judges follow precedent (Prior Cases) B. Civil System/ Civil Law -Much of Western Europe follows civil Law. -The larger number countries are under Civil Law. C. Hybrid Law is the systems which involve both common and civil Law. D. International Law is based on the concepts in countries. E. Comity is a principle for international law. Government documents are generally valid from country to country. E.1. Example: Your Georgia driver licenses. E.2. Example: Court pronouncements are generally valid from country to country. Exceptions=> Must be in line with law and with public policy of host country. II. Doctrines of International Law A. Act of state Doctrine A.1. Acts by a country within the borders don’t give rise to lawsuits in another country. A.2. Example: What happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas. *** You can’t sue another country, only foreign individuals. III.
