Learning objectives At the end of this lecture, you will be able to: 1) Describe the relationship of size and volume of a cell. 2) Compare the resolution of an electron and light microscope. 3) Explain the processes of autophagy, phagocytosis, and receptor-mediated endocytosis in the delivery of materials to the lysosomes. 4) Describe the role of the Nuclear Localization Sequence in the movement of molecules into the nucleus.

1. Cell size is limited by the surface area-to- volume ratio. The surface area of a cell is the area that interfaces with the cell’s environment. The volume of a cell is a measure of the space inside a cell.

volume ratio. The surface area-to-volume ratio reflects the ratio of the surface across which molecules (like oxygen) can use to enter the cell, compared to the total amount of molecules inside the cell that require these molecules. Surface area-to-volume ratio
