Lesson 14 In the previous four lessons, we have worked with quadratic equations; how can you tell whether an equation is quadratic? Example 1: Is the following equation quadratic? Certain equations which are not quadratic can be solved using the same methods as quadratic equations, if an appropriate substitution can be made. For instance, the equation is not quadratic; however, if I make a substitution, such as , I can make the equation quadratic. ( ) ( ) Now if I substitute in for and in for , I have the following: This is a quadratic equation that can be solved by completing the square or using the quadratic formula. IMPORTANT: If the original problem is in terms of the variable , then your solution should be in terms of the variable . If you substitute, be sure to back substitute
