Lesson 14 In the previous four lessons, we have worked with quadratic equations; how can you tell whether an equation is quadratic? Example 1: Is the following equation quadratic? ± ² ³ ´ µ ¶ · ¸ Certain equations which are not quadratic can be solved using the same methods as quadratic equations, if an appropriate substitution can be made. For instance, the equation ± ² ³ ´ µ ¶ · ¸ is not quadratic; however, if I make a substitution, such as ´ · ¹ , I can make the equation quadratic. ¹ · ´ (¹) ´ · ( ´ ) ´ ¹ ´ · ± Now if I substitute ¹ in for ´ and ¹ ´ in for ± , I have the following: ¹ ´ ² ³¹ µ ¶ · ¸ This is a quadratic equation that can be solved by completing the square or using the quadratic formula. IMPORTANT: If the original problem is in terms of the variable º , then your solution should be in terms of the variable º . If you substitute, be sure to back substitute
