BS 172 Homework 1: Tree Height Worksheet Name_____________________ 30 pt Sec ____ Team ____________ Let’s suppose that you’re an arborist for Michigan State University and were asked by the Land Management Office of MSU to evaluate the potential shade that certain species of campus trees provide for dorms and office buildings. They are especially interested in whether Sugar Maple ( Acer saccharum ) or Northern Red Oak ( Quercus rubra ) give the most shade. This is a daunting task, but you think that comparing the average heights of mature trees of each species might lead to a quick estimate of likely shade. You also remember that BS 172 students have been measuring trees and compiling their height and diameter at breast height (dbh) data on a Lon-Capa database. You randomly sample from the database 21 trees of each species to provide the following data: Tree Height (m) Sugar Maple Red Oak 24 24 21 16 20 14 21 10 20 10 24 18 17 19 25 17 13 15 18 9 19 17 18 16 14 12 21 18 17 19 22 18 15 23 20 22 19 16 27 13 22 14 1. Use the graphs below to plot size-frequency histograms of the two tree species. (4 pt)
