Offer’s opportunity and helps to establish social order and it perpetuates inequality. “Education is the great equalizer”. Transmits culture, promotes social integration, training and social control. Stimulating cultural innovation, and childcare How does education vary across countries? What special issues arise in the education in the US due to the many different cultures in the US? The US is all about fair opportunity and working for your status. Other countries, a lot of it has to do with who your family is and where you’re born. Because of this there is inequality in the school system. Depending on your parent’s education and lifestyle determines how well you will do in school. How the teacher feels about your potential will also determine how well you do in school. Know the key terms related to education given in the text? Education-formal process of instruction in which some people consciously teach while others adopt the social role of learner Hidden curriculum-standards of behavior that are deemed proper by society and are taught subtly in schools Teacher-expectancy effect- the impact that a teacher’s expectations about a student’s performance may have on the student’s actual achievements Tracking-The practice of placing students in specific curriculum groups on the basis of their test scores and other criteria Correspondence Principle-The tendency of schools to promote the values expected of individuals in each social class and to prepare students for the types of jobs typically held by members of their class Credentialism-an increase in the lowest level of education required to enter a field.

What gender differences exist in terms of education in the US? -Women weren’t allowed to go to college until 1833 and even then they were forced to cook and clean for the male students. In the 20 th century sexism showed up in the textbooks stereotyping women and in counselors pushing for women to do women’s work. Today more equality with title 9 and no discrimination in acceptance. Woman graduating with degrees is not increasing. What are the different student subcultures of education that have been identified by researchers? What characteristics define each group?
