Unformatted text preview: 10.13.2011 Transnational Mothering- Definition: Refers to the organizational arrangement of a woman who mothers her children across national borders; usually refers to a migrant woman who leaves her children bhind in the country of origin o Transnational Mothers live a wide array multiple organizational arrangements Ex: Mother is a working mother Father works abroad, the mother stays at home with the kid- Can Be Short Term or Long Term o Example of short term: circular migrants between Poland and Germany o Example of long term: Filipino migrants in the US and the Philippines- Mothering as “circuits of affection, caring and finiancial support that transcend national borders” (HS and Avila, 550)- Redefining mothering to encompass breadwinning (562)- Transnational Mothering Maintains Ties Across Space and Time o Send money regularly o Communicating by telephone (take advantage of technology) o Communicate by letters- Rhythm and not instantaneity determines the routine of transnational family life...
