REVISED SYLLABUS Instructor: Rhacel Parreñas, [email protected] Course Time 9:30-10:50 am or 11 am -12:20 pm Office Hours: Tuesday 8-915 am, Thursday, by appointment SOCIOLOGY 220 (GE): QUESTIONS OF INTIMACY What is intimate occurs not in a vacuum. Intimate matters allow us to interrogate social issues and problems. They also speak to issues of citizenship and membership in the nation-state. By intimate matters, we refer to 1) conditions of intimacy and 2) personal relationships, including those that are durable such as marriage and those that are fleeting such as a “hook up.” As we will learn in this class, intimate matters are structurally determined and are shaped by socio-cultural norms. This class uses the lens of “intimacy” to help students develop analytic and critical skills for understanding social inequalities of race, class, gender, sexuality and nation. Students will be introduced to analytic tools of understanding the politics of race, class and gender; social cultural transformations in society; hegemony; and the persistence of structural inequalities. The class will look at the politics of intimacy in the state, family, labor market and sexual encounters. This course meets the University's Diversity Requirement because, throughout the semester, we explore how the dimensions of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation are related to intimacy and the politics of intimacy. Course Requirements and Grading Discussion Section 10% Grading criteria will be determined by the Teaching Assistant. Midterm Examination 25% Critical Readings of Text 30% Course is divided into select subthemes: theoretical foundation, the state, family, intimate labor, and sexual encounters. Students will select two subthemes and write a 4-5page critical reading/review of selected texts assigned for each of the two themes. A critical reading is not a summary but instead it requires drawing the key points of selected texts (i.e., your choice of texts), linking the arguments of the texts together, and lastly developing a thematic overview for the set of readings that you have chosen to write about. Due dates vary but will always be on the Tuesday following the end of our lectures on the theme you are writing about. Final Examination 35% Readings 1
