Divya Asuri 11/1/2011 EC Write-Up Love and Money Dr. Parrenas’ lecture focused mostly on the fusion of love and money in today’s society. She first spoke about Viviana Zelizer’s article, The Purchase of Intimacy , and went over the three dominant perspectives on commercial intimacy, including the Hostile Worlds View, the Nothing But Perspective, and the Differentiated Ties view. She explained how the Hostile Worlds View, one that is the most widely held, involves the belief that intermingling both money and intimacy causes social and moral contamination. The Nothing But Perspective involves the view that intimate relations are nothing but a rational exchange. Differentiated Ties, however, is the belief that money and intimacy subside in all relationships but involve different monetary exchanges based on the type of relationship. She also lectured about the different types of relationships and the money involved. She gave one example of Anna Nicole Smith, who obviously married for
