Unformatted text preview: Definitions The term Sex Work (introduced by Carole Leigh) underscores the selling of sex as viable labor. The term Prostitution refers to the provision of commercialized sexual intercourse, or receiving payment for the provision of sex. Sex Work is broader than prostitution , encompassing the provision of a wide range of sexual titillations including pole dancing, flirting, performing fellatio, stripping, and (Il)Legality of Prostitution in the US In 1908, The Bureau of Investigation investigated the problem of “white slavery” and interviewed brothel employees. Of 1106 prostitutes interviewed, six said they were victims of white slavery. Mann Act of 1910 was legislated, prohibiting interstate transport of females for “immoral purposes.” It is primary intent was to address prostitution and immorality. What is immoral? Prostitution, consensual debauchery, adultery, polygamy The first person prosecuted under the act was the African American heavyweight champion Jack Johnson, for crossing a state line with the white prostitute Belle Schreiber. In 1918, the Chamberlain-Kahn Act gave the power the power to quarantine any woman suspected of having an STD. An STD was used to prove that one is a prostitute. Intended to protect soldiers from contamination. In 1967, NYC eliminated licensing requirements for massage parlors. These parlors became brothels. In 1970, Nevada started regulating houses of prostitution. First one was opened in 1971 – Mustang Ranch. Nevada now allows brothels to operate in 10 of 17 counties. Prostitution is a symbol of patriarchy or according to Pateman "an integral part of patriarchal capitalism“ › a means for men to get access to the female body (carnal) › it reduces women to a bodily good (like a public CONTRACTARIANS Contractarians defend prostitution, which in the process according to Pateman hides the sexual subjection of women.
