Role and duties: Preside over the House Refer legislation to committees Involved in committee assignments of party’s members Involved in setting the agenda of House Spokesperson for party Speaker is the majority party’s leader and largely sets how things get done in the House. Power has fluctuated over time.

Minority leader: Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) Minority party has less legislative power (e.g., setting agenda). Keep party members together as opposition to majority party.
