Ryan Pool Honors Physics Period 7 The History of Snowboard Cross (Boardercross) Snowboard Cross is a very simple sport; it’s a race down the mountain and first one to the bottom wins. I once got on a ski lift with a man who raced boardercross and he told me that boardercross started when friends would race eachother down from the top of the mountain at the end of the day in order to be the one who got the “first cup of hot chocolate.” 1 Snowboard cross became a real sport with set rules in 1991 when three men, Greg Stump, John Graham, and Steven Rechshafner, had the idea of combining the jumps, banked turns, and race atmosphere of motocross with the speed of snowboarding. Through this snowboard cross was born and the first race was held between 8 riders, 7 men and 1 woman, in February of 1991 on Blackcomb Mountain in Whistler, British Colombia. 2 Snowboard cross was quickly accepted as a sport in the winter X-Games, but did not catch on so fast in the Olympics.
