Common Organizational Patterns 1) Chronological Order – time order, sequence of events. Ideas are presented in the order in which they occur in time. This pattern may be used to report a current event, to recount a historical event, or give steps in a process. 2) Classification – an object or idea is explained by dividing it into groups and describing or explaining each. (example: computers – microcomputers, mainframes, laptop computers, etc.). To GROUP and EXPLAIN. 3) Listing – information is organized into lists on the basis of characteristics, features, parts, or according to categories.
