Sociology 340 Lecture 1 / September 1, 2010 Main points: Reproduction is affected by culture and is not just a biological experience Having a baby is a very social experience Our society is both celebrates births but also polices mothers having babies Reproduction and Society Reproduction in sociological terms So, for example, we investigate the differences between groups of people and compare how they vary in patterns of reproduction For example, the age at which girls get their periods and secondary sex characteristics has gone down o Mostly get their periods between ages 11-13, but many at younger ages (8 or 9 sometimes) o Causes: Hormones in milk or meat, radiation, energy, cultural exposure, media influence, weight gain o Associated problems? Developing sexually but not emotionally/mentally Menopause can start earlier by changing the time period for fertility Boys are also affected (since they do not mature biologically as quickly as girls) Managing fertility
