October 20 th , 2010 By looking at patriarchal domination and woman’s status, one can tell about a countries culture. Patriarchal structure Built- in: idea that women must be reproductive (that’s where they get their value, not economical value) Reproductive value for women therefore lies in having sons Agency/ autonomy (mobility & freedom) women have little/ no agency therefore becoming isolated. Need to rely on men; reproduction is their only value. North India (Reading) Women extracted from her family (goes to husbands family); only have ability to bring children (especially boys in order to get wealth) Women who are isolated are kept from education Can see fragments of this in US History Married women’s prosperity acts (Elizabeth Stanton) Wives can sign contracts, etc if they can earn and it’s their money.
