Topics for talks - some possible suggestions. Was there ever liquid water on the surface of Mars? When? How much water? What is the evidence for water? Choose a major extinction event (there were at least 5). What was the cause of the extinction? What is the evidence? What is a key biological event in the evolution of human intelligence? Or, how did human intelligence evolve? Explain what you can in 25-30 minutes. Describe species of earth bacteria that might be well suited to living on Mars. How would it obtain energy? Describe its metabolism. Describe a hypothesis regarding a key event in the origin of life. Look through the “Science Daily” archives. Find something that can be astrobiology-related & explain it to us. Could earth-like bacteria survive in a deep ocean of a cold moon of Jupiter or Saturn? What are the major problems? Is there enough energy available for metabolism? What would be a possible energy source for metabolism?

I can make this information available to the class. Next time - Begin choosing dates. Any between March 20 (right after spring break) and May 1 are OK. 2 people per day. What is the ribosome? With about 52 proteins and 3 RNAs, the bacterial ribosome has a molecular weight of over 2 million atomic mass units. The eukaryotic ribosome is similar in structure, but even larger.

Ribosomes have 2 subunits (“small” and “large”). Small subunit binds mRNA. Linking of amino acids (the peptidyl transferase reaction) occurs on the surface of the large subunit.
