2 A health problem I am currently battling is weight gain during pregnancy. Being slightly overweight going into pregnancy did not help matters and now in my 38 th week I find myself even 50 pounds heavier. Throughout the pregnancy I have tried to control my weight gain, but my body is reacting just the same way it did when I was pregnant with my first son. I have had a few weeks of zero weight gain, but the weight catches up and rears its ugly head on the scale at the next doctor’s appointment. The added weight is not only cumbersome, but it is unhealthy as well. I find myself sitting for longer periods of time than I used to. Any exercise, even walking, is painful on the knees, hips, and back. I am also having issues with swelling and that is caused by the sodium intake. Even though no additional salt is poured on top of the meals, there seems to be enough sodium in foods to satisfy two people. The combination of weight and swelling is extremely uncomfortable for me, and that is why a major concern of mine is to begin trimming down as soon as possible after my son is born. Post-partum recovery time will be longer due to the fact I will be having a Cesarean section. Because of that, I will need to rely on dietary measures alone for weight loss before I can start exercising. I plan on breastfeeding and that can really help burn some calories. However, I still have to be careful of the calories I consume since breastfeeding alone is not going to help lose the weight if I don’t change some of the habits I have taken on during pregnancy. For instance, discretionary calories must be modified so that they total less than 300 calories of my daily calorie intake. Discretionary calories are the extras added into the diet, as described by The Food Pyramid. Those extras include higher fat cheeses, milk, and other dairy products, higher fat meats, sweet foods like candies, cookies, and cakes, snack foods like chips, added fats or sugars
